Two tier justice again in the Employment Tribunal after they awarded damages to A TV staffer who claimed she had been wrongfully dismissed by the production company making a Lucasfilm-backed series. She convinced the tribunal that bosses had seized on her comments about working with a white man as an excuse to fire her. What would have happened if she’d made comments about working with a black man? Justifiable dismissal, no doubt.
Why would a UK employment tribunal want to hear this dispute?
An Employment Appeal Tribunal upheld Tuesday the right of journalist Saima Mohsin to pursue claims of discrimination and unfair dismissal against CNN’s international arm in England. How does this make sense when her employment contract was to be governed by U.S. law and most of her work took place in Asia?

Someone applied for a job to do research for the Law Commission. Apparently they refused to provide her with adjustments for her reduced vision during an online recruitment test. One would think that having very bad eyesight would preclude someone from being able to competently do research of legal documents. The job applicant decided to file a claim against the Law Commission for disability discrimination.

Foul mouthed chef was awarded £13,000 by an employment tribunal ($18,000) after ruling that a spa hotel failed to accommodate her disabilities during a disciplinary probe over a foul-mouthed argument — despite them agreeing that the company was justified in firing her. Why then was she given a penny?

A tribunal has ordered a car dealership to pay two former sales representatives a total of £356,000 ($477,000) after they experienced race discrimination and harassment, with one manager frequently using the slur “Somali pirate.” Did the sales reps complain to the boss? Why are “hurt feelings” worth so much money?

The Employment Appeal Tribunal denied permission Thursday for a law firm to challenge a ruling that it had discriminated against an employee by failing to make reasonable adjustments for his sleep disorder.
In other words. You can’t discipline someone for always showing up late for work if they claim they have a “sleep disorder”. Like playing video games or watching TV till 2am?

Never could this be considered harrassment. This tribunal is power mad:
A tribunal has ruled that a business consultant working at Shell may have harassed a female colleague by labeling her clothes “conservative.”
A UK nursing home has been ordered by an employment tribunal to pay a domestic assistant £6,954 ($9,311) after adding her to a Sunday work rota that required her to skip her church services.
So other employees will have to work Sundays to cover her shift that she doesn’t want to do. Why get a job that would require you to work Sundays if you weren’t willing to do so?
