The first priority of every aspiring politician is to get elected.
Once elected, their first priority is to be re-elected.
Everything else is secondary.
They justify this view by arguing that they want to do good and they can only do good from a position of power and influence.
In reality it means they will accept bribes, sorry, campaign contributions, from those that want to promote their interests, such as drug, fossil fuel and tech companies. This is why drug prices are so high, policies don’t promote energy saving and privacy on the internet doesn’t exist. In the USA.
They will also appeal to the basest interests of the voters, whether that is hatred of minority religions or extra welfare for deadbeats.
Nothing is too morally right that it won’t be sacrificed to get elected and stay elected.
